Your First Appointment

Everything you need to feel supported and prepared for your first appointment with the Tri Health Clinic

Starting therapy is a big step—and we want to make it feel a little easier. Whether you’re coming in on your own, with a partner, or for something you’ve never talked about before, this page will walk you through what to expect, how to get set up, and how we can help. You don’t need to have it all figured out.

Before your appointment (paperwork!)

Before your first appointment, you’ll receive some forms through our online booking system, Jane. These include your consent form, clinic policies, credit card setup, and info about payments, cancellations, and how to file a complaint if needed.

We know it’s a lot—but it’s all important. Completing the paperwork ahead of time means your therapist can spend more time focusing on you (and less time explaining forms) during your first session.

Please complete your paperwork before your appointment.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to our intake coordinator, Melanie, at admin@trihealthclinic.com. She’s happy to help.

What does a first therapy session look like?

Your first session is 90 minutes long, and it is all about getting to know you. Your therapist will ask questions to understand what’s bringing you in, what you’re hoping to work on, and how they can best support you.

There’s no need to have all the answers—or to tell your whole life story in one go. We go at your pace. If you’re feeling nervous, that’s completely normal (and very common).

For couples sessions: Most of the time, we meet with both partners together in the first session.

What is sex therapy?

Sex therapy is talk therapy focused on sexual health, intimacy, and relationships. It can help with a wide range of concerns—from low desire or pain during sex, to mismatched libidos, erectile difficulties, exploring identity, or simply wanting to feel more connected.

Sex therapy is talk therapy. The only sexual element is the topic being discussed. You’ll never be asked to share more than you’re comfortable with, and you will never be expected to act out or demonstrate anything sexual in session.

We’re here to support your sexual health, relationships, and well-being through conversation, education, and evidence-based strategies—nothing more, nothing less.

If you’re feeling nervous to talk about these things, you’re in good company. Many clients feel that way at first. We’re here to make it as safe and comfortable as possible.

What do I need to know about couples therapy?

We structure couples therapy a bit differently than individual work to make sure both partners feel heard and supported.

Here’s how it typically goes:

  • Session 1: 90 minutes together — We meet as a couple to understand what’s bringing you in and to begin mapping out the issues and goals.
  • Sessions 2 & 3: 50 minutes individually — Each of you will have your own session so we can explore your perspectives more deeply.
  • Session 4 onward: 50 minutes together — We return to meeting as a couple, with occasional individual or “breakout” sessions as needed. We’ll keep things balanced and collaborative—if one person has an individual check-in, your therapist will usually suggest the other partner does too.

Important guidelines for couples therapy:

  • All emails must include both partners. If your therapist receives a message from only one partner, they won’t read or respond to it. The couple is the client, and transparency is essential for ethical care.
  • Each of you must have your own Jane account, even if you’re using the same credit card. This allows for proper documentation, consent, and secure billing.
  • Insurance and receipts: If your plan requires only one partner to be listed as the payee, let us know in advance. However, both partners’ names will appear on the receipt, as they are present for the session. We cannot omit a name for insurance purposes—that would be considered fraud.

If you have any questions about the process, don’t hesitate to ask your therapist directly. We’re here to support both of you, every step of the way.

What if I don’t feel like it’s a good fit?

Therapeutic fit matters—a lot. If something doesn’t feel right, you’re allowed to say so. Sometimes that means tweaking the approach; sometimes it means trying someone new.

If you ever feel like the fit isn’t quite right, you can speak with your therapist directly or reach out to our Intake Coordinator at admin@trihealthclinic.com.

Our team is here to support you in finding the best care possible—even if that means making a change.

How do I book, rebook, or cancel appointments?

Once you’ve set up your profile in our online booking system (Jane), you can view your appointment history, access receipts, and book or change appointments anytime.

You’re also welcome to coordinate directly with your therapist if you prefer.

Payment and Cancellation Policy

All appointments are billed after your session, and receipts are emailed to you through Jane. You’ll be asked to add your payment method before your first session.

We require 24 hours’ notice for cancellations. Missed sessions or cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice will be billed at the full session fee, since your therapist has reserved that time for you.
